Hey Guys,
Just had my draft Saturday night...went pretty smooth. Only a few minor bugs that I noticed that anyone other than me probably wouldn't notice anyways. Just some little display things..nothing major.
Anyways, here's how I ran our draft...worked very well for a live draft, defintely our best and smoothest ever so I thought I'd share it with you guys and maybe get some ideas how you run your draft.
We didn't have a high speed internet connection at the bar we had our draft at so I brought my desktop with me and ran phpffl and the draft locally of that. I just downloaded a dump from my live phpffl site and imported it locally so that all I had to do after the draft was dump my local db and import it online.
So I had that desktop to run the webserver & phpffl. We connected that to a projector and projected the main draft screen so everyone could see.
I also got a few guys from the league to bring the laptops. I created a LAN by networking the laptops to the desktop so that the laptops could access the webserver & phpffl which was running on the desktop. We used those laptops as player lookups, so guys could go and see what players were available, draft order and team rosters. Worked awesome...having guys being able to query draft & player data real time definitely sped up the draft in the later rounds.
Also, not sure what browser you admins are using to run your draft...but I used Firefox and the Firefox search came through huge for me. When someone called out their pick I just went to Find Player, selected their position from the drop down and clicked submit. Then did a CTRL-F to search on that page...typed in the first few letters of their last name and it almost always was the first or second player found. The Firefox CTRL-F is integrated into the bottom of the browser instead of a popup window like IE...and it also does the search as you type so you don't even need to hit Enter unless you looking for Smith in which case you just hit enter until you get to the Smith your looking for. Anyways, this worked great so thought I share it with you guys...seemed like it only took a few seconds to find each player. |

That's a good idea with using firefox and the search. I used IE, and in the later rounds when someone would call out a no-namer I just did a submit all, and scrolled through the list. But after a few beers, half a pizza, and a couple hours of drafting it didn't work so well. I'd be looking right at the name and still not see it. The only thing I could think of to improve on this process would be to have the default set to all for positions for people who do it like yourself.
We had the draft in my basemnet so I had a live internet connection. I setup a table and a live hub where people could plug their laptops in. It went very well. Players were doing research on ESPN, and checking injury status inbetween their picks. I had a spare monitor that was logged in as a normal user, this allowed it to auto refresh in the draft module. Although it was up to 60 seconds behind, it worked well. |

Yeah...someone else mentioned default to ShowAll. Maybe I'll make this an Admin option in the future. I put it to one position just cause depending what connection you are on could take extra time to load all players...but when you get to the no-namers ShowAll is the way to go.
Sounds like you had a pretty cool setup as well...that's cool guys could do research on nfl & espn during the draft. Did you share the laptops or did each guy just use his own laptop?
We've got a 16 team league and could only scrape up 2 laptops this year...but for what we used them for seemed to be pretty good. 3 would have been ideal...but 2 was fine. They really didn't get used much until the mid rounds. |

| We had a 10 men league, and like 4 laptops, so it was no problem finding an open computer. I thought it was a real cool setup, the finacee thought I was quite the geek. Oh well. |

Glad you guys had a great draft.
My Draft wasn't as smooth. lol.
I started the draft at noon on labor day and it didnt finish til midnight.
Longest draft I had in history, 10 member league with 14 rounds.
everyone was logged in at different locations of my state some instant messaged me their picks and I had to call half my members up on the phone.
Reason it took so long is my #4 guy didnt get off work til 4 so we had to wait on him, my #6 guy went out to eat around 7 didnt come back til 7:45 and so on.
1 player was picking blind since he is a truck driver and I had to read back the entire draft to him every round. Then he was driving in a hurricane damaged area and I couldn't get through to him on the phone so that took like 30 minutes.
Also everyone wanted the rookies but my draft wouldnt update the rookies into the draft until right after the draft for some odd reason.
Only if I waited 1 more day it probly would of went smoother.
Felt like a real NFL Draft in length.
I kind of like that feature with the admin putting in the picks that way theres really no time limit or rush for the draft so it can go on as long as you need it too incase someone is busy at the moment cause all my members were busy on that day and it was hard to get everyone online at the same time.
It really gave my members more time to think about their next pick choice
since everyone was taking a long time to choose.
I never turned the clock on.
Anyways I love the program so far and I'm looking forward to all the new additions in the future.
One I would like to see is the live draft feature where members can put the picks in themselves. but still leave an option where you can have the admin put the picks incase you need more time.
Another feature would be a random pick draft like yahoo has so if someone misses the draft it will manually pick for them from a list of players they have set that they desire.
Maybe even a salary cap feature would be nice too.
Keep up the great work. |

A 12 hour draft
Anyways, live draft where members can put the picks in themselves & a yahoo style random pick where you ran the players....both planned for next year.
Will be using some technologies I'm not really familiar with yet to accomplish this yet so I can't guarantee it...but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do it. The draft module is #1 on the list of updates for the offseason... |

| are you looking into java for the draft module, or are you going to stick with PHP? |

It'll still be php, but I'm looking at using AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to handle the problem of sharing live data across multiple browsers. Basically, it allows you to refresh data without refreshing the browser...so I'd be able to update picks across everyones browser at the same time, prompt people that it's their turn to pick.

| That would kick ass. Maybe everyone can pitch in and get you an ajax book... |

I found a solution for this. It is very bad code, but it seems to work ok.
Find out what my team_ID is (check teams table)
Then edit Program_files\livedraft\livedraft.php
Change line 156 (give or take two lines) from:
if(document.getElementById("team_ids").value.search(re) != -1){
to
if((document.getElementById("team_ids").value.search(re) != -1) || (team_ids.value == 8) || (team_ids.value == 7)){
This allows users who have teamid 8 or 7 to select players for all users. The "draft now" button stays active for the admin always. It allocates the members to the correct team.
I am sure there are more elegant ways to do this. If you have mulitple leagues or divisions this could give admin rights away in the live draft to other unsuspecting members.
Hope this helps.[/quote] |
